Introducing two new awards!
Creative City Builder Award
Recognizing Toronto leaders and companies who have meaningfully contributed to the creative spaces and communities in Toronto.
Recipient: Alfredo Romano
Alfredo Romano started Castlepoint Numa over thirty years ago and has earned a reputation as a visionary city builder who sees potential where others do not. Highlights of the firm’s projects include the L Tower and retrofit of Meridian Hall, the vibrant industrial space for the Museum of Contemporary Art, three major expansions of Pinewood Toronto Studios, and the pre-construction of a 400-seat capacity performance hall in Weston Park.
Creative City Champion Award
Recognizing individuals who generously give of their time, resources, and expertise to bolster the creation of Canadian artistic work and/or the impact and resiliency of cultural organizations.
Recipient: Paul and Janice Sabourin
Through the Sabourin Family Foundation, Paul and Janice Sabourin have funded myriad of arts organizations over many years, including Canadian Stage, Soulpepper Theatre, Crow’s Theatre, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Image Centre at TMU, the National Ballet of Canada, McMichael Gallery, and the Stratford Festival. Paul is the current Chair of the Trillium Hospital Partners Foundation, and a former board member at Canadian Stage who continues to give his time and energy to support the company.
Artistic Achievement Prize
Recognizes Canadian artists who have meaningfully contributed to advancing the craft of theatre through their creativity, rigour, and body of work.
Recipient: Philip Akin
Philip Akin is an award-winning cultural leader and has been acting and directing for 47 years. He was a founding member of Obsidian Theatre and served as its Artistic Director from 2006 to 2020. Philip Akin has been the recipient of the Silver Ticket Award, the Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award, the Playwrights Guild of Canada Bra d’Or Award, the William Kilbourn Award, the Herbert Whittaker/CTCA Award for Distinguished Contribution to Canadian Theatre, the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, as well as the Life Membership Award from Canadian Actors’ Equity Association.
Emcee: Hollywood Jade
Hollywood Jade is one of Toronto’s visionary talents. This dancer/choreographer turned artistic director.
has showcased his multidimensional artistic creations on both the big and small screen, stages locally and internationally, and has shared the stage and screen with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Divine Brown, Rihanna, Janelle Monae, and Kelis. Hollywood is currently Canada Drag Race’s resident choreographer and recurring guest judge; next he’ll be making his Canadian Stage debut in The Inheritance.
Performer: Ben Page
Ben Page is a nonbinary theatre artist and musician who is following in the footsteps of their father, great Canadian singer-songwriter Steven Page. Their composition debut Leaving Eden (book and lyrics by Jenny Waxman) won best musical in the New York Musical Festival in 2019, and they have become a recognized face in Canadian theatre, performing in productions with Bad Hats Theatre, Drayton Entertainment, and Buddies in Bad Times. Ben will be making their Canadian Stage debut in the Canadian premiere of The Inheritance.
Performer: Janelle Cooper
Janelle Cooper is an award-winning Actor, Director, Choreographer, Producer, and Writer, recently featured in Canadian Stage’s acclaimed hit, Fall On Your Knees. Janelle will treat the Theatre Ball audience to an encore performance of her signature song from the production.
Performer: Maev Beaty
Maev Beaty is a critically-acclaimed and sought after actor, writer, creator, and voice-over artist. She is a Toronto Theatre Critics’ Award winner, multiple Dora Award winner and many time nominee in both performance and writing, referred to as “the excellent Maev Beaty” by the New York Times. She has originated more than two dozen roles in Canadian premieres; co-written and starred in award-winning plays; performed in ensembles of epic theatre endeavours; and interpreted lead classical roles across the country and over many seasons at the Stratford Festival. Maev will be starring in a soon to be announced 24.25 Canadian Stage season production.
